How to improve the impact resistance of wear resistant ceramic linings?

Wear resistant ceramic linings solve the wear problem for heavy wear industries such as cement, steel, mining, lithium batteries, and metallurgy. However, in actual use, some factories believe that wear-resistant ceramic linings are brittle and not impact-resistant. So how can we improve the impact resistance of wear-resistant ceramic linings?

The main material of the wear-resistant ceramic linings we usually refer to is alumina, whose fracture toughness KΙC ≥4.8MPa•m1/2 and bending strength ≥290MPa. Compared with metal materials such as steel, the impact resistance is indeed inferior, but through some special processes, the impact resistance of wear-resistant ceramic linings can be greatly improved.

1. Surface design of spherical protrusions:

The unique mechanical properties of the spherical protrusions can evenly disperse the impact force on the lining, reducing the possibility of the lining being broken by impact. It is a common method to improve the impact resistance of wear-resistant ceramic linings.

2 Increase the surface rubber area: Wear-resistant ceramic liners are mostly used in combination with rubber. The impact resistance of ceramics is weak, but the impact resistance of rubber is very strong. We can give full play to the advantages of both, using ceramics for wear resistance and rubber for impact resistance. The specific operation method is to expose more rubber on the surface of the liner during the vulcanization process, such as leaving gaps or using round ceramic pieces. It should be noted that as the rubber area on the surface of the liner increases, the ceramic area will decrease. While the impact resistance is improved, the wear resistance will decrease. When using it, it is necessary to consider it comprehensively according to the actual working conditions.

3  Add other raw materials to alumina for toughening treatment: Chemshun Ceramics Co., Ltd. has been committed to the production and research and development of wear-resistant ceramics. A certain proportion of zirconium oxide is added to the alumina raw material to form toughened alumina wear-resistant ceramics, which can greatly improve the impact resistance of wear-resistant ceramics. The impact resistance of alumina wear-resistant ceramics is indeed weak, but this problem can be solved by spherical design, vulcanized rubber, and adding zirconium oxide, so that wear-resistant ceramic liners can adapt to most heavy wear and strong impact conditions.
